Interview with Colleen Hoover & Giveaway!

We LOVE Colleen Hoover.  Reading a book by this author reminds us why we like to read in the first place.  She is sooo talented.  Her words easily pull us into the story and transport us in to the character's world.  She takes us on a journey that makes us feel every emotion.  There is witty banter, humor, lust, heartbreak, devastation and redemption and love.  My favorite thing about reading her books is that they are unpredictable. Since Kara and I are such huge fans, we asked Colleen Hoover for an interview so we could find out more about her as a person.  I about peed my pants when she actually responded to my request!! Hope you enjoy her responses as much as we did.  And if you haven't read her books, what are you waiting for??
What is your typical day like?
I can't say there is a such thing as a typical day for me. I stay pretty busy. When I'm at home, I spend most of the day locked up in my office. This year I've had so many book signings that I also spend a good portion of my days traveling and attending those signings. This career is really a 24/7 commitment, so I'm always focused on work. Of course, I always set aside time to spend with my family.
Coffee, tea, pop or water?
DIET PEPSI. Wait. No. I quit Diet Pepsi.
Let me explain. I have been addicted to Diet Pepsi for, well, a really long time. My sister has spent the last ten years trying to convince me how bad the aspartame and other chemicals in diet sodas are for me. So, I recently decided to work on weening myself off the DP. They sell this really delicious stuff at Wal-Mart called Sparkling Ice. It has zero calories and it's delicious. It has some ingredients that I'm unfamiliar with. They're probably just other chemicals that in five years we'll find out are just as bad as aspartame. But until then, that's my answer! Lol.
Dancing - in your seat, on the dance floor, on top of the bar or not at all?
Not at all. Well, unless of course there's some wine and a karaoke machine around.
Tell us 5 people you'd like to have dinner with (alive/dead, sister/friend/kids).
Paul Rudd
George Gergenblatt (from Wanderlust, played by Paul Rudd)
Peter Klaven (from I Love You, Man, played by Paul Rudd)
Chuck (from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, played by Paul Rudd)
Anyone who can get Paul Rudd to have dinner with me.
What are your favorite books/authors?
I have come to know so many great authors since this career started, so it's hard to narrow it down. However, a couple of books I read when I first started writing that really moved me are The Fault in our Stars by John Green and The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay.
What is your secret obsession?
........diet pepsi. (Shh, don't tell anyone, I'm supposed to be quitting.)
What/who was your inspiration to write your first book?
My mom. My first book was intended to be nothing more than a Christmas gift to her. She encouraged me to write my whole life so I am forever grateful to her for that.
What books/authors influence your writing? Is there someone you consider your mentor?
Not really. To be honest, I hadn't really even read many YA/NA books before I wrote Slammed. I had no idea I was writing a YA book. Genre wasn't even something I considered. I just wrote, and Slammed is what we ended up with!
Any unexpected pro's/con's to publishing your books?
I think it was all unexpected. Before I signed on with Atria, I didn't really know what the differences were between self-publishing and traditional publishing. When you are self-published, you are in complete control. But that also comes along with a lot of extra stress. There are plenty of wonderful things about self-publishing, but I'm grateful for the support I get from my publisher.
Will you continue to self publish?
Probably. Atria only publishes books intended for a very specific target audience. If I ever decide to branch out from NA/YA, and the book is not a good fit for Atria, that may be an opportunity to self-pub again.
Do you write yourself into any of the characters in your books? And if so, WHO??
No, I've never written myself into any of my characters. For the most part,

they are purely fictional. However, Kel, from the Slammed  series, is loosely based off of my own sons. I have a son named Cale, which is how I came up with the name Kel. And many of the things Kel does in the book are things my kids have actually done. For example, using kool-aid to make a snowman look bloody, calling lasagna "basagna", and talking backwards. Also, my husband's first name is William, but he goes by his middle name. I didn't intentionally name Will after my husband, but I'm sure I subconsciously did.
Who was your favorite character to write & why?
Daniel and Six were both really fun to write. Six is from Hopeless and Losing Hope, and Daniel is just in Losing Hope.  (Since we got the interview responses, Colleen Hoover released Finding Cinderella, a novella featuring Daniel and Six.  And it's FREE!!)

Do you write the stories from beginning to end?  Or does inspiration sometimes strike out of order?
I mostly write from beginning to end, but sometimes I will think of something I want to go back and change or add to a part I've already written.
Do you decide the title and then write the book, or write the book and then come up with a title?
I usually come up with the main points of the story in my head, then think of the title, then start writing.
How did you come up with the covers for your books?  Is it difficult to work with someone to turn your vision into an actual cover?
The original covers were just designed by me through CreateSpace using free images they have to offer. Hopeless was designed by Sarah Hansen with Okay Creations. I kind of just let her take the reigns with that one and she did a wonderful job. The newer covers for Slammed and Point of Retreat, as well as This Girl and Losing Hope, were all designed by Atria. It hasn't been very difficult to work with any cover designers thus far. They basically put together a cover for me, I tell them what I do and don't like about it, and they tweak it until it's right.
What is the most challenging part of writing/publishing a book?
It takes SO. MUCH. TIME. I love every minute of it, but sometimes I just wish there were more hours in the day (don't we all?). Seriously, if someone would go ahead and invent a pill that prevents us from ever needing sleep again, yeah, that'd be great. Kthx.
Who would you cast to play Will and Lake if Slammed makes it to the movies?  Any updates on movie production of your books?
Some people have suggested Bryce Draper or Ian Harding for Will. Readers have also suggested either Phoebe Tonkin or Emma Stone as Lake.

<<< Bryce Draper.  I approve!

Do you plan to write any other genres (edgy, racy, more adult or paranormal??)? Will you use a pen name if you do take on a different genre?
Yes. Probably nothing paranormal, but I am working on something a little more racy and adult, called Ugly Love. Unfortunately, it doesn't come out until next year, so you'll have to be patient! :)
Who did you write your books for - who is your target audience?

When I first started writing, this wasn't something I thought about. I was writing for my mom. That was it. Now, I guess my target audience is young adults, because that's the category most of my books fall under. But honestly, I have readers of all ages and even some men like my book. I really just write what's in my head and in my heart and hope that some people will enjoy it.

If you had to do it all over again - become an author - would you do anything differently?

Heck no! I don't regret a single moment of the last 20 months.

More Than This by Jay McLean - Blog Tour!!

Blurb:

*Mikayla*
In one night my fairytale ended. Or it may have begun. This is my story of friendship and love, heartbreak and desire, and the strength to show weakness.

*Jake*
One night I met a girl. A sad and broken girl, but one more beautiful than any other. She laughed through her sadness, while I loved through her heartbreak.

*This is our story of a maybe ever after.*

He was right. It made no difference whether it was 6 months or 6 years.
I couldn’t undo what had been done. I couldn’t change the future.
I couldn’t even predict it.
It was one night.
One night when everything changed.
It was so much more than just the betrayal.
It was the Tragedy.
The Deaths.
The Murders.
But it was also that feeling.
The feeling of falling.

Excerpt:
My eyes widen and snap to Jake. He looks down, and shakes his head, with  laughter in his eyes. He removes my hand that was covering his mouth, entwines our fingers, and gives my wrist a chaste kiss before Logan adds to the story.
That’s not all that happened, tell her the rest, Jake.”
I look at him. Oh my god. He slept with her.
Oh my god, you slept with her?” I gasp out.
NO!” he yells, and everyone cracks up. “NO! What? God … No!” he says again, shivering and making a disgusted face.
Then what?” I ask.
He presses his lips together, as if refusing to speak. I make an exasperated sound, and turn to the rest of them, eyes wide, pleading someone to finish the story.
Heidi starts to giggle, and everyone joins in.
What? WHAT HAPPENED?” I need to know.
Heidi calms herself down. “Homegirl had an engagement ring on the dash board—a male engagement ring. She proposed to him!” She’s struggling to keep talking through her laughter. “She proposed to him, naked, in the back seat of his truck, with people all around!”
NO!” I gasp, looking at Jake, bewilderment clear in my voice. He just nods his head slowly, his thumb stroking my stomach.
What did you do?” I ask him, but he just shakes his head. I look to everyone else. “What did he do?”
This is the best part,” Cam continues. “He gets so freaked out, he jumps out of the car, and starts to run home. It was an away game! It took him five hours to walk home. He left everything in his truck. His phone, wallet, gear bag, everything. He couldn’t call anyone. He was so freaked to go back to the truck, in case she was still there waiting for him, or if the ring was still there. We didn’t drive out to pick it up until a week later. He went a week without a car, because he was so freaked out.”
That’s just one of the stories,” Dylan adds. “There’s like, a hundred more just as crazy.”
I’m laughing so hard now my sides hurt.
I’d almost forgotten what we’re all doing here.
And then I remember, and stop myself from laughing.
Because today is not a laughing day.
Jake brings his hand up to my face and kisses my temple. “You can laugh and be happy, Kayla. They would want you to be.”
I smile and kiss him on the cheek.
Logan takes a huge gulp of his beer and then belches, fingers pointing between Jake and me. Heidi and Lucy groan in disgust.
I’m going to ignore this epic, ovary explosive, sexual tension thing you guys have going on and ask a question.”
I stifle a laugh against Jake's neck, while he rolls his eyes at Logan.
Ask your question, asshole,” he says as he rubs his nose against my jaw. God, that accent, and that voice.
My eyes close for a second. I think my ovaries will explode.
Why does he call get to call you Kayla, and everyone else calls you Micky?”

I shrug. “Because my family called me Kayla.”

Bella's Review: 5 Amazing Stars!!

This book totally sucked me in. I read it all in one day, chores/life be damned. So be prepared to go MIA for a few hours while you read this book because once you start you won't be able to stop.

The book starts with prom night. Mikayla is getting ready and she is going with her long time boyfriend of 4 years, James. Her best friend, Megan, is going stag. At the restaurant, Mikayla finds Megan and James in an intimate way. Not only that, they have been sleeping together for 2 of the 4 years she has been with James. So she has lost her best friend and boyfriend in one night.

Jake is going to prom at a different school and happens to be dining at the same restaurant as Mikayla and her group. He sees Mikayla as she confronts Megan and James. And he sees her crumble. Jake wants to help cheer her up. He invites her to his prom and introduces her to his friends. Deciding not to let James and Megan ruin her prom night, she decides to accept his offer. And it helps. Jake and his friends welcome Mikayla into their group.

The devestating news for Mikayla is not over yet. And Jake is there for her. Even though they just met, they develop an intense bond.

Jake is completely swoon worthy!!! He's a baseball hotshot (yes, he is a big deal). And has his history of being a party animal and sleeping around, but that is all in the past. He has his head on his shoulders and is focused on his future. Although he can't seem to stay away from Mikayla. He wants her.

Mikayla wants Jake too. But she feels broken. She feels like she needs to be able to stand on her own two feet before she commits to him. This push/pull thing they had going on drove me nuts!!! I wanted to shake Mikayla!!! What's the problem, girlfriend??!! You don't want Jake? No problem, I'll take him!!!

I must say, this book completely threw me for a loop (in the best way possible). I'm not sure what I was expecting. But what I got was a book that was jam packed with emotion, substance, humor and lust. It was not predictable. And while I wanted to knock some sense into Mikayla, I loved watching her relationship with Jake develop.

Also, I LOVED the supporting characters. I wanted to jump into the book and become friends with all of them.

OH – I also LOVED the mention of TSoT in this book! Freaking love that book.

Can't. Wait. For. LOGAN!!! It can't be released soon enough. Bring it on.

Thank you, Jay McLean, I more than a lot liked this book!! And I will look for all future work.

Highly recommend. One of my favorite books this year.

Blog Tour: Until November by Aurora Rose Reynolds

Until November by Aurora Rose Reynolds
Kara's rating: 5 of 5 stars

You know that book where your tummy gets butterflies because it is an awesome read from the first page... this book was one of those for me. I loved this book. I got on the my phone to text my co-blogger to read this ASAP. I was completely consumed by this read!

Asher is a HOT main character. and he has three HOT brothers. and they all get books! YUM.

The writing was easy. fun. enjoyable.

Some of my favorites:

Well of course I am going to love this book - page 5 speaks just like my own love for COFFEE. "My feet move without my command to the source of my weakness. I love coffee I drink so much coffee every day that my coffee consumption alone could support a small country.

Uh- Me too! Aurora Rose Reynolds

"...a bathtub that dreams are made of. Well, at least girl dreams."
and what girl didn't love this scene?!?

"34%..."Night," I whispered, cuddling closer and listening to his breathing even out. I felt his body relax a few minutes later and I quickly followed him to sleep."

*Swoon* I think THIS scene described the most perfect way to fall asleep! (while there is more to the scene you need to read - you get the gist)

Until November (Until, #1)Bella's rating: 3 of 5 stars

What I liked about the book:
- Asher is HOT - muscles, tats, dimples, killer smile. And he's alpha male - he goes caveman on November.
- Sexy read with some funny parts.

What I didn't like about the book:
- Editing. Some paragraphs change from past tense to present tense within the same scene. This happened a lot and drove me a bit nuts. There were errors - words missing, quotes missing, etc. Usually I can look past this, but I felt like I wanted to get out a red pen as I was reading to make corrections. It was distracting to me.

- Insta love. Asher just takes one look at November and knows she's the one. November things he's a complete jerk, but somehow she agrees to go out with him. Then she becomes victim to the "Asher fog" - which happens when he puts his mouth on her, and ends up in a relationship with him. This is hard for me to relate to.

- The attacks/mystery side story. This felt like a way to try to give the story more depth and it missed the mark with me.

Bottom line - I loved reading about Asher and enjoyed the steam. But it was tough for me to connect with November and believe how this couple got slammed with love from the get go.

I think there are more books to come with Asher's brothers and this author has good potential. But I need more depth and I need better editing. I look forward to watching this author improve.
